Physical Education at Cambridge Park Academy

Inspiring Every Pupil to Move, Achieve and Succeed

At Cambridge Park Academy, Physical Education is an essential part of our curriculum and plays a key role in supporting pupils' physical development, health, wellbeing, communication, confidence and independence. We believe all young people should have access to high-quality physical activity opportunities that enable them to experience success, develop life skills and enjoy being active throughout their lives.

Our PE for all curriculum is carefully designed to meet the needs of all learners through inclusive, engaging and meaningful experiences that develop physical literacy, movement competence, problem-solving and social interaction. Through our ‘Move, Solve, Connect’ approach, pupils are supported to become active, confident and successful participants in physical activity. We are proud that our commitment to PE, physical activity and school sport has been recognised through achieving the Gold School Games Mark.

PE Curriculum

PE Curriculum Overview

At Cambridge Park Academy, our PE for All Curriculum has been carefully designed to provide meaningful, engaging and ambitious learning opportunities for every pupil. We recognise that pupils have diverse strengths, needs and starting points, therefore our curriculum is delivered through three progressive pathways that ensure all learners can access, enjoy and achieve success in Physical Education.

Pre-Foundations Pathway

The pre-foundations pathway supports pupils working at the earliest stages of development. Learning focuses on sensory engagement, body awareness and the development of fundamental physical skills.

Pupils are encouraged to:

  • Explore movement through play and sensory experiences
  • Develop body awareness and spatial awareness
  • Build confidence in movement and physical activity
  • Improve balance, coordination and mobility
  • Engage with adults and peers through physical interaction
  • Activities are highly personalised and designed to promote engagement, communication, wellbeing and physical development.

Foundations Pathway

The Foundations pathway provides pupils with opportunities to develop core physical literacy skills through structured and engaging activities. Learning centres around developing independence, communication and confidence while building a broad range of movement skills.

Pupils explore:

  • Agility, balance and coordination
  • Fundamental movement patterns
  • Gymnastics and dance
  • Athletics activities
  • Team games and cooperative learning
  • Outdoor and adventurous challenges
  • Health, fitness and wellbeing

The focus is on developing competence, confidence and enjoyment while helping pupils understand how physical activity contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

Functional Pathway

The Functional pathway prepares pupils for lifelong participation in physical activity by applying skills in increasingly challenging and realistic contexts.

Pupils develop their knowledge and skills through:

  • Invasion games
  • Net and wall games
  • Striking and fielding activities
  • Athletics
  • Fitness and conditioning
  • Outdoor adventurous activities
  • Sports leadership
  • Inclusive and competitive sport Learning encourages pupils to make decisions, work collaboratively, solve problems and take responsibility for their own progress and performance.

School Sport

We believe competition should be accessible, inclusive and meaningful for all young people.

Pupils have opportunities to represent Cambridge Park Academy through:

  • Inter-class competitions
  • Intra-school festivals
  • School Games events
  • Local SEND sports festivals
  • Football fixtures
  • Athletics events
  • Table Cricket competitions
  • Inclusive sports tournaments
  • Multi-sports festivals

These opportunities help pupils develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and a sense of achievement.

Sports Leadership

Sports Leaders play an important role within our academy.

Our Sports Leaders:

  • Support PE lessons and enrichment activities.
  • Help organise and run sporting events.
  • Assist with equipment setup and management.
  • Encourage participation during break and lunchtime activities.
  • Support younger pupils during events and festivals.
  • Help promote healthy and active lifestyles.
  • Develop leadership, communication and teamwork skills.

Working in collaboration with the Grimsby Town Foundation the programme provides pupils with valuable employability and life skills while encouraging them to make a positive contribution to the school community.

Through sports leadership opportunities, pupils are given a genuine voice in shaping sporting experiences across the academy, reflecting the values of youth leadership recognised within the School Games programme.

Pupil Voice

"Sport helps me work with others and be more confident."

"I enjoy representing the school and trying new activities."

"Being a Sports Leader has helped me become more independent."

Pupil voice is central to the development of PE and school sport at Cambridge Park Academy, helping us provide activities that are engaging, meaningful and enjoyable for all learners.

At CPA, we believe that physical development (PD) and physical education (PE) are integral parts of our pupil's development.

We are a hub for inclusive engagement within NELC and the wider region and support our own setting and many others to come together and celebrate PE and sports for all!

We are an official partner with Beyond the Physical and we utilise their physical literacy-informed and mastery-based PE Scheme of work to teach transformational PE to our children.

By creating children who are Masterful Movers, Skilful Solvers and Confident Connectors we ensure every child has a purposeful, meaningful and holistic PE journey during their Primary/Lower school years to embed a positive experience of physical activity for life.

“Our vision is that all children have the opportunity to live active and healthy lifestyles through engaging in a wide range of sports. We want to ensure that they develop competence, endurance and resilience in a broad range of physical activities and competitions. We encourage all children to embrace sporting values; learning how to be respectful and honest, and to have passion, self-belief, determination and be able to work as part of a team.”

Pupil quotes:

“I like playtimes when we play games together and learn new skills.”

“I like big group games and working as part of a team.”

“I like P.E. because it is fun and we get to run really fast and play with the balls.”
